- An underactive thyroid can most certainly cause you to gain weight or to keep it on.
I have hypothyroidism--which is the name for an underactive thyroid--and my doctors have all, over the years, told me that one of the "side effects" of hypothyroidism is weight gain.
The thyroid controls your metabolism, and your metabolism (that is, how your body processes/uses food [in a nutshell]) certainly influences your weight. It also influences things such as your energy level, sleep patterns, sensation of body temperature.
Thyroid levels are checked easily by a simple blood test. Your doctor could know in a short time if you had hypothyroidism.
As for potassium deficiency, I don't know anything about the symptoms for that. Sorry. A Google search should give you any info you're looking for, though.
