- Check out www.EQUUSmagazine.com They should have some articles on thyroid they have in the past printed things on it.
Depending on if the horse is high or low you will have to give medication for the rest of her life. It is not expensive but should be a consideration. Also this may affect other things in her general health.
They give different meds and you would have to work with a vet to determine which she needs and what type you want to use.
You have to give them every day so someone would have to be there to give meds each day.
If the horse can preform at the levels you are lookiing for I would not excluse the horse from my selection based on just the thyroid problem. But if there were two and one had it and one did not and all else was equal I would take the one with out the problem.
- I leased a horse with a low-circulating thyroid (I believe that's what it was called). He recieved a supplment once per day, called Thryo-L, a prescription supplement.
I bet if you googled your quesiton, you could find some great answers there too. If you already have a vet that takes care of horses, I'd give them a call and see if they can provide some information for you.
- My mare was diagnosed with thyroid problems when she was about 15 or so. We put her on a poweder called Thyro-L to help. A few years later, we did more testing and found out, in fact, that she had Cushing's Disease. My vet told me that many horses that seem to have thyroid problems acutally do have Cushing's. Having lived with my mare with this disease for about 8 years, I know that it can be a rough go sometimes so I would rather steer clear of a horse that showed symptoms. We eventaully had to put her down.
Common signs of Cushing's : increased/excesive drinking and urination
thick, crested neck....I've even seen some pony's necks actually "flop" over
won't loose their winter coats....I had to give my mare a full body clip twice a year so whe wouldn't overheat in summer
the dimples above their eyes are puffy/swollen
many will founder because of the disease.....founder was actually what tipped me off my mare was ill...she was a 14.3hh quarter horse x and not prone to overeating, not on grass...nothing that would normally cause laminitis
they can loose muscle mass and become weak and unsteady on their feet
higher respiratory rate
mares do not cycle regularily and will not concieve
If you do a general search of horse thyroid or horse Cushing's, you'll come up with several good websites on the topics.
- no.....but I have 3 horses,2 dogs,3 cats,and 5 fish
- Be very careful if the horse is grey. Many grey horses get cancer of the thyroids..but there are lots of other causes.
I wouldn't touch a grey horse with any sort of thryoid problem
