Does anyone have underactive thyroid? because I do. And I have a few questions.?
Im 24 and Im on a medication called synthroid and I just was researching and it said that you could take coconut oil to bring it back to normal because mine is just slightly out of balance due from my recent pregnancy. So just wondering if I should change to that. I know you are all thinking ask your doctor but I did and she did not say anything about this need some help here.

- Coconut won't cure your Hypothyroid, Keep taking your drug.
- Believe it or not , and not to be disrespectful but some doctors only know how to diagnose and not much else. They probably do not have time to study any further. Anyway call your pharmacist or go in for a consultation. Just ask them your questions. That is their 'forte'! Its amazing at how many people never talk to them. I know, that high counter doesn't help either. But they're usually very happy to advise you of these kinds of things.
- Coconut oil does not work to replenish thyroid hormones. It does, however, work lovely as a conditioner on your hair.
Synthroid is synthetic thyroid hormone. It's replacing what your body is not producing. Your doctor will, or should, continue to check your thyroid levels while you're on Synthroid.
And it's important NOT to take a generic form or skip the blood tests.
- yah, be careful, an underactive thyroid can cause loss of energy and weight gain. my mom has no thyroid and is on levothroxin. I havnt heard about the coconut oil. probably BS
- Please visit the following site. It has a wealth of information for thyroid patients. Do a search on coconut oil, and you will find a lot of information.

Many thyroid patients do not do well on Synthroid, which is a replacement for the T4 part of the thyroid hormone group only. You may need to change to a combination T3/T4, such as Thyrolar, or change to Armour, which is a natural thyroid extract.
Many doctors are not aware of the fact that not all bodies have the ability to convert T4 to T3, so you may need to change doctors to find someone who is willing to work with you and change your prescription.
- I haven't heard of coconut oil being used as a substitute for thyroid meds, but I have heard it being used for those who are hypothyroid to help them with weight loss.
Slightly out of range? Often doctors say this and it's not true because they are basing their comment on one test result. This test (The TSH) can be lower if you tested around 2PM, resulting in the doctor thinking you are fine, when you may not be.
Symptoms of hypothyroidism can progress to some dangerous symptoms, so don't mess around with not taking your thyroid medication. It's quite possible that things may change for you once your pregnancy levels settle down, but for the most part the condition is for life.
Below are some thyroid links
- a asked a few doctors who are endocrinologists
they have never heard of this
thyroid functions can fluctuate so it isn't a good idea to stop taking the synthroid without your doctor's advice
under active thyroid function can cause a myriad of problems and lack of treatment can make it worse over time
it is an autoimmune disease and if untreated can lead to heart disease
depression and a host of other problems
synthroid is very inexpensive as medications go and to stop taking it would be putting your future health at risk
many diseases presented themselves post pregnancy
another example being diabetes
- Why your thyroid is under-active is less important than the fact that it is under-active. Your doctor has prescribed something that will replace the hormone that you are currently not producing enough of. If your thyroid production corrects itself, then that will show up on the blood tests, and you will be able to come off the medication.
Since your thyroid is out of balance due to a pregnancy, just give your body a bit of time to sort out all the hormones it has been producing and get itself back in balance.
I have Grave's disease, which is an overactive thyroid. The doctors tried to regulate it for years with little success, and I finally had to take the radioactive iodine treatment. Now my thyroid is under-active and I am on synthroid for the rest of my life.
If you really want to try the coconut oil, don't go off the synthroid. If it helps, then your doctor can take you off the medication. I usually advocate starting with simple natural solutions before resorting to medication, but in this case you are probably better off with the synthroid than trying anything else.
- Please following you're doctor's advice. It is not that unusual to have some thyroid problems after childbirth. Your body is low on a hormone that controls your central nervous system. I'm sure coconut oil will do nothing. If you want to try it ask the doctor if you can take it along with your medicine and he'll probably okay it. The pill is made of the hormone you're low on, so there's no doubt that it works!
- If you are nursing then it may not be a good idea to strt a new supplement,.. otherwise, what could cocunut oil hurt?! I would watch your LDL's and try it.
- I AGREE WITH YOU. HYPOTHYRODISM ASSOCIATED WITH PREGNANCY WILL GET CONTROLLED BY PROPER DIET INCLUDING FRESH VEGETABLES SUCH AS SPINACH, TOMATO, BEAT ROOT AND OF COURSE FRESH COCONUT OIL- BETTER WILL BE COCONUT MILK AND COCONUT WATER. I DO NOT THINK THAT YOU NEED TO TAKE SYNTHROID.
GOOD LUCK
