If my underactive thyroid is not level....?

Can I lose weight?

  1. Maybe, but it would be extremely difficult, but it is possible. I actually lost 15 pounds while hypo, but I had to exercise excessively to achieve this and this was at the time where I believed I was hypo, but the TSH didn't make it over the 5.5 for a diagnosis. It's hard enough with it level, even more difficult when it isn't so if you are hypothyroid it's best to keep track of your levels. For most, the morning TSH needs to be around 1.0 for weight loss with diet & exercise.
  2. your thyroid controls part of your metabolism by producing hormones that burn energy. an underactive thyroid will cause weight gain, not loss.
  3. If you have an under active thyroid, you can gain, over and you can lose.
  4. My sister has hypothyroid. She always has had a problem with letting go of extra weight (and other hypothyroid related things). While we were finding out more about this problem, one health book we read (sorry I can't remember the name) said that most women have thyroid problems, but are not bad enough to be picked up by doctors.. but they cause weight gain, lower body temperature, and water retention, and tiredness. to take regular allopathic thyroid medicine thyroxin I think it is called, it can make you infertile, and have thin hair- probably alot of other bad things. There is one alternative called cynoplus I think, that is much better.. it has to do with t4 and t3, and how the body absorbs it... My sis liked this one and took it for some time (higher energy, started getting thinner etc.) this is from my memory of all this stuff. My sis doesn't take any medicine for it anymore. still has a little weight problem, but she is not bothered by the extra weight She had a beautiful baby boy last year and is doing pretty good.
  5. I have hypothyroidism, the underacheiving thyroid, and it is very difficult for me to lose weight if I am not taking my thyroid medication to balance out the problem.
