Anyone knows anything about dealing with a thyroid problem?

I have a friend that is over weight, but not obese. She has a pear shape....bottom heavy. Well, she has been trying to loose weight and one time she had lost about 12lbs and gained it back plus some extra. Now she is still trying to loose weight, so she has changed her eating habits (she self medicates with food). Now that she has found out that she has a thyroid problem, she is using that as an excuse for not loosing weight and being able to eat right? She says that the doctor told her that it ws no reason to diet now, until she gets the thyroid under control (basically). Now is that a reason not to diet and exercise? Will it not help at all if you did? Are their any websites that I can give to her, so that she can read up on it. Thanks alot!!

  1. Hyperthyroidism is characterized by hypermetabolism and elevated serum levels of free thyroid hormones. Symptoms are many but include tachycardia, fatigue, weight loss, and tremor. Diagnosis is clinical and with thyroid function tests. Treatment depends on cause.
Hypothyroidism is thyroid hormone deficiency. It is diagnosed by clinical features such as a typical facies, hoarse slow speech, and dry skin, and by low levels of thyroid hormones. Management includes treatment of the underlying cause and administration of thyroxine.

  5. Right now your friend is suffering from hypothyrodism, and is probably feeling very unmotivated.

While losing weight may be more (extremely) difficult it is no excuse for not eating health and exercising.

I did a quick search too and listed a website. Seems like for many even properly treated will have a more difficult time losing weight.
  6. Sounds like she has hypothyroidism. That can hinder her from even wanting to lose weight. She should eat right, but I can understand her feeling blah. When they do get her thyroid to the right level, she will feel much better and have more energy. Don't give her a hard time about diet and exercise. She's knows she's overweight and she has to WANT to lose it.
