Diabetes, Low Thyroid, Insulin Resistance & Metabolism?
I was diagnosed with "real" (not gestational) diabetes about 3 wks ago. I am 33, 14 weeks pregnant with our 2nd child and the symptoms are making no sense. According to my daily test numbers I am actually hypoglycemic and when I got my thyroid levels back, those are out of whack (1st # is normal, but low and 2nd # is REALLY low). I am 5'4" and weigh about 119 lbs, which is my usual weight. Can hyperthyroidism can insulin resistance and screw up the 3 hr glucose test that I did which is why the CNM stated that I am diabetic? And since I have always been hyper, nervous and small of size, would this be a red-flag for the thyroid? Not seeking real medical advice, just trying to organize my thoughts for the first High-Risk OB appointment tomorrow. Any other questions I should ask? PLEASE point out any thing else I should ask about!!

- When you say "real" diabetes, does that represent insulin dependant diabetes? Sorry I don't mean to sound ignorant, but in the UK we use differant word terms for diabetes. If real diabetes does represent insulin dependant diabetes, it would be interesting to find out if you are using HUMAN or ANIMAL insulin, not that I am an expert but I myself have just found out that most people worldwide are using human insulin when animal insulin seems to be more beneficial but not widely available. I would like to also add that in the UK, people diagnosed with diabetes now has to be screened for Coeliac Disease as both conditions are becoming more recognised, people of short stature (small in size) is just one of the typical signs of someone with coeliacs!
- When I say "real" diabetes, I mean diabetes that is not related to my pregnancy. Hence, "real" versus gestational. No, not taking insulin. Saw the High Risk OB today and he said that so far I am doing a good job controlling it with my diet. YAY FOR ME!!!! No other sharp pointy objects!!
- Those are good questions but you need good sleep, diet, exercise and really follow through with a doctor's recomendations. Trying to line up your questions before you see your doctor sound like anxiety and you should jot down some questions and submit them to your doctor. Just make an honest try at your doctor's suggestions and that will be your best bet. Get some rest and try to avoid the anxiety of these conditions. Things will unfold at their proper time but listen to your doctor not some internet crap. Follow your doctor's advice to a tee.
