My thyroid levels are low. The doc says it means its overactive which means you lose wieght...but I'm gaining?

The doctor sais my thyroid levels were low which she said means I have a overactive thyroid which means that I would lose weight. I don't understand because I'm gaining like crazy. I just had my first child as well. Is this something that I should be concerned about?

  1. There a few different levels they check, could be T3 or T4, or TSH. In general, when a doctor says thyroid levels are low, that means the T3/T4 is low. That would mean your metabolism is slower than it should be, UNDERactive thyroid, not OVERactive. Low thyroid symptoms include weight gain, hair loss, lower body temperature, fatigue. Overactive thyroid symptoms include shakiness, large eyes, weight loss. Doublecheck with your doctor.
  2. I'm with the other reply. It sounds like you're hypothyroid, not hyper. I have Hishomotos (sp) and have been battling with underactive thyroid since I was 3 years old. Definitely call your doctor and confirm whether its high or low and then inquire about what this doctor intends to do about it? It shouldn't be "oh you're low.." then nothing is done, like prescribing synthetic hormone replacement.
  3. if ur thyroid levels are low...u wouldnt have OVERactive thyroid....it means that ur thyroid is not producing enough(hypothyroid)...this would be a good reason u r gaining weight cuz low thyroid affects your metabolism...you can use the link to see such symptoms
