What can you tell us about hypothyroidism in children?

My one year old grandson has just been diagnosed with thyroid disorder. He has an underactive thyroid. Luckily it was discovered before any complications arose, as this can be very serious in young children. No one we know has ever heard of such a young child being diagnosed with this disorder. We would appreciate comments or information from anyone who knows of a similar situation.

  1. My grandson was born with it. They can't detect it until the baby is born. They also said it is a state law that the test must be done in the first eight days after birth. If it isn't the child can develop many complications.

My grandson is on daily medication. He will be on meds the rest of his life. He has to see a thyroid specialist and his pediatrician on a regular basis. His meds are adjusted as he grows. They watch him very closely because even though they discovered it at birth, they say he can contact some strange things. He also has asthma, which some times puts him in the hospital.

He is so adorable. Audy is six now. Since he has been on meds all his life, he goes to the cabinet every night at dinner time and takes his meds. If he has a asthma attack, he can set up his nebulizer with his medication. He lays down on the floor and does it by himself. He has to have a lot of blood work done so he's a pro at that too.

He's brillant and has always been at the top of his preschool classes and kindergarden. He's even more special because he only has one sister and she is sixteen. Audy is like an only child.

I could go on for days as I'm sure you could too as proud grandmothers......I don't know if Audy is any more sick than a kid without this disease. Now you can tell everyone you know someone that has it......God Bless you and your family.
