We just adopted a 3 year old malti-poo on Tuesday. 1st time pet owners.?
She's perfectly house trained, doesn't chew, snap, lick, or bark, and has all her shots. She's adorable, lovable, already listens to us, and seems very happy. She's the perfect dog and we plan on keeping for the duration, and want to make sure she stays healthy. She has spurts when she has a ton of energy, but for the most part she's either laying with us or laying on the tile, very docile. Other than no people food and excercise is there any way to make sure she stays healthy and active? Do I need to worry about her thyroid? Any tips on Malti-poos?

- I have never had a Malti-Poo, but just make sure to give it plenty of L-O-V-E and attention, and you will have a really good friend. I am sure she loves you already for adopting her.
Do not giver her people food, especially CHOCOLATE!
Take her for walks. Let her know where she can and can not go (like no roads, etc.)
Has she been checked for Heartworms? If not, get her checked.
If she tested negative for heartworms, start her on preventative. Make sure to have her tested first. If you don't and you start her on preventative, it could kill her if she a;ready has the worms. Talk to the vet to learn more about them.
Good Luck and Congratulations on your newest addition to the family!
Mutt or not, she is your's and if you lover her, then don't worry about what she is. Plain and simple....she is your's, be happy and love her. Dogs make great pets. I have 5 dogs and 2 are "mutts", but, they are MY MUTTS! Enjoy your dog, sounds really cute and well trained, that's a bonus that you did not have to train her!
- Congrats on your new family member!! How awesome when we adopt and they turn out to be the perfect pet for us. I think you are starting out great. I agree with republic on the vet though. Whenever I get a new dog or puppy I always take it to my own vet for a complete exam..
I would not worry about thyroid issues unless she shows signs, the blood tests a quite expensive. I have a 12 year old border collie/lab and at age 2 she got realllly fat, I put her on a diet, did not help.
At that point I KNEW what it had to be and sure enough it was her tyroid. She has been on meds ever since and behaves like a young dog.. just today she was running through the sprinkler..LOL
This part is for FROST and the idiots like her: ALL DOGS were once mutts. "purebreds" are a mix of 2 to 4 different breeds..Betcha didn't know that, ya probably thought the breed just appeared one day like the big BOOM right?
Do some research....

"As the Maltese was developed using miniature spaniel and poodle blood, and was primarily bred as a hunting dog, they were much larger in size than their present-day counterpart. When the smaller-sized Maltese began to gain ground in popularity, early breeders would often confine their breeding stock in pens too small for them to even turn around, so as to promote a smaller progeny."
- Congrats on saving her life!!
The first thing I did when we rescued our dog was brought her to the vet. Even though the rescue group did the same thing, I wanted her to get in and for him to get her on record and to give me any general advice. I strongly recommend this.
To keep her healthy, make sure you are feeding a top quality food. It's so important - especially in little dogs. Brands like Evo, Merrick, Natural Balance, and a few others are loaded with human grade foods that can help prevent health issues. It really does make a world of difference.
To keep her exercising, find a favorite toy and set aside time each day to play with her. And, take her on walks whenever possible.
You've made a great decision and you'll have a best friend for a long long time!!
- Why no people food? That is an old wives tale. Dogs should eat healthy food - lean, low sodium meat & poultry, fresh fruits and vegetables, healthy carbs. Stay away from sugars, sodium, additives. Get her healthy dog food - not sold in supermarkets or chain pet stores, but found in smaller, higher quality pet stores. Foods such as Merrick, Chicken Soup for the Dog's Soul, Solid Gold, Evo, California Natural, Wellness.
Get a vet to check her out to make sure there are no problems that you be unaware of. Pls be aware that there is often a "honeymoon" period for newly adopted dogs - they are often unsure of where they are and are checking things out - am I safe? is there enough food? are they nice? When they are secure, after a few weeks, they will relax and you may see more sides of their personality.
