Old dog with hip dysplasia becoming aggressive?
due to pain. Only likes me now, not my hubby or kid! She is on pain relief, and anti- inflamm. I had her thyroid levels checked as well, they are normal. Any suggestions? I don't want to her to be PTS, but I can't have her snapping at friends and family either! She is crate trained and I'm barely managing! HELP!!

If she is on prenazone careful! that changed te temperment of my friends dog big time.
Let her smell people more throuroghly now. Keep her away from to much noise and confusion. Make the children approach her in a quiet manner and correct her instanly if she snaps at someone

- she's on glucosamine,glycoflex, vit c, and sometimes rimaldly when it's really bad. I appreciate all the answers, and am so sorry for those who have lost their pups to this disease. It's so hard because her brain is fine and she still wants to run and play when she feels good!
- Love her let her go. I love my Bootsie she is going to be 14 and is starting to have problems. Talk it over with her vet, your dog will love you for it.
- Honestly - she probably needs to be put down. I'm not being mean. We had to put down our 3 year old becuase he had severve DJD and had aggression problems. It was the toughest thing I have ever gone through but it was best for him.
- I would not jump to conclusions and put your dog to sleep just yet. This happens all to often because people don't know or understand how to manage the problem of arthritis and hip dysplasia in older dogs. The NSAids such as Rimadyl and others must be carefully managed by your vet and can do more harm than good. I'm not sure what type of glucosamine you have her on currently, but a liquid form is best and will provide better results than a pill form. There are many other options available that traditional vet's don't discuss with you when treating hip dysplasia. I would definitely recommend not making her stay in a crate too often especially if she doesn't have room to stretch out comfortably. The following pages will give you plenty of information along with different options available for helping your old girl. First steps you should take are to provide her with an orthopedic bed in a warm place, check out the following pages and links to other resources. Don't give up on her just yet. - Please do not let this dog suffer any more than she already is. I know you don't want to loose her, but she needs to go to the Rainbow Bridge. You are keeping her alive for you !!!! Consider her for a change. Would you like to live in the pain she is in? I think not. If you love her, let her go.

- Well, sounds like the pain meds aren't working. Try fish oil capsules (the omega threes help lubricate the joints), ester vitamin C, and glucosamine and/or chondriotin. To give you an idea of dosage, 50 lbs dogs can have 2-4 fish oil capsules, 2000 mg of ester C, and 1500 mg of glucosamine.
- im guessing that she is in so much she cant bear people around her. Only one person to help treat her or so. alot of dogs rather have this one person she trust around her when she in pain.
