My dog woke up in the middle of the night panting, or breathing really hard, whta's the problem?

I was thinking it could be a bad dream, but I've seen her have them before, but not breathe this hard. It was almost like she couldn't catch her breathe. She is an old dog, around 10 years old, is in thyroid meds, but her thyroid level isn't that low. Is this something I should be concerned about?

  1. my dog does the ssame thing he's about 14 years old now, the vet said it is either sleep acnia or coud be caused by his weight, he's a little on the fat side lol. cud also be that she is getting hot panting is a way for dogs to cool down.
  2. To warm
Just like a person getting "night swets"
  3. Sounds as though she got overheated. Usually a dog will breathe heavily or pant heavily because they are too hot. I would possibly have the vet check her thyroid again, the thyroid can be very tricky to regulate in a dog, just as it is in a human. If her levels are low then she may get hot or cold very easily. Her thyroid medicine levels may not be right for her, and unfortunately she must be on this medicine the remainder of her life.
Good luck....and I hope she feels better soon!!!
I listed a few links for you to read more about it.
  4. It's a really bad dream..trust me the same thing happened to my dog.
  5. I wouldn't be concerned unless she keeps breathing this way. It was probably a bad dream, or like some others said, she got too hot in bed,
