Can Valerian root be given to dogs to help them sleep and can it be taken along with tyrosine thyroid med?
my scottish terrier has been put on thyrosyn tablets for a low thyroid problem. since going on this medication he has not been sleeping well at night. I know that valarian root can be taken by people for help sleeping but I don't know if it is safe for dogs also

- Not sure about valerian root, but I was told that it is ok to give them benedryl. Not alot, mind you. But for occasional use its ok. Also, the pet stores sell a herbal remedy for stress and calming. its granular and can be mixed into their food. Hope this helped
- As your dog is already on medication I would HIGHLY ADVISE you to consult your vet before adding anything...it could be this is a side effect (not sleeping) that your vet needs to be made aware of, it could interact with the medication, it could simply be that your dog has a higher energy level because he is no longer suffering from a thyroid deficiency and this is 'normal' for him.
Can valerian be used in animals, yes, but as stated above, I implore you to discuss this with your vet BEFORE giving ANY other medications, be they herbs, natural, or over the counter - it could be a matter of life and death.

- I have given valerian root to dogs with anxiety. didn't hurt any one of them.
- Valerian root is strong tasting, smelling. He might take it if given in capsules, but dose would be too strong. He needs half capsules. Chamomile Tea (dry) is safe, and dogs like it mixed with a little canned food. for his breed, about 1 teaspoon of the leaves in his 2 spoons of food. At your grocers it will be called "Sleepy Time Tea" or Chamomile, or the cheapest in Mexican Spice section called chamomilla.
- I'm not sure about giving it full strength,but I do know that some supplements for dogs contain it.Many places sell supplements for car rides,or to help calm dogs during storms and such,that contain Valerian.Below is a page from Dr Foster and Smith's website.It contains supplements for dog stress,and you can see it's in the ingredients of several.That being said,since your dog is on Vet prescribed medication,you need to check with them before giving your dog any remedy,be it natural,herbal,or other.
