My cat has hyperthyroid w/ dosing changes and decreased appetite. We need steady dosing & food help?
Tara a female Calico has been taking Methimazole 0.20ml/2x daily. She will have labs and her med. will be increased or decrease based on her thyroid level. Her kidney functions are also affected w/ increased drinking and urination. She has now lost her appetite and her med. has been decreased. Do you have any suggestions on dosage and what she may like to eat that she just can't pass up because it smells and tastes so good. She is sleeping on the patio rather than her bed inside the house, I'm assuming she is hypothyroid at this time, w/ low energy and possibly the airconditioning is causing her to be cold? She's loosing alot of weight. Thank you

Each cat's hyperthyroidism is unique. Changing the dosage can ONLY be based on her blood results - this is the way hyperthyroidism is managed, by regular blood tests and adjustments of dosage.
I really hope no one on here is silly enough to suggest a dose rate for your cat - DO NOT listen to them if they do! Even if they are professionals, NO professional can suggest a dose without having seen your cat's blood results
Talk to your vet. There are a couple of other treatment options for hyperthyroidism, but as your cat has had the condition for a while and is now exhibiting secondary symptoms, I think these options may be out of the question now- plus your vet will have suggested them IF they were appropriate, which they aren't always.
As for feeding - try tuna, or just warming up her current food - cats like food at body temperature, They also like wet, smelly food as it excites their sense of smell and makes them more likely to eat.
I'm afraid your cat is showing symptoms of what can eventually happen to cats with hyperthyroidism, but this really isn't the place to go to for advice - your vet has done right by her so far, please continue to consult him/her.

- I hope youre not feeding youre cat any cans food from the recall ? you should change the food habit and buy youre cat and new dried cat foods instead . plus you should talk to ur vet doctor for treatment.
- Have her checked out again by vet she could have diabetes.
- My 15 yr old Kinsey cat was found to be slightly hyperthyroid about four months ago. He has been on a once daily 1/2 pill of the medication. He's due for another check in about 10 days. I think he has picked up some weight, still drinks water (my other cats never do), and still has quite an appetite.

- I'm sorry, but this cat needs to be taken to a professional. Her life is possibly at risk. Please take her to the veterinarians soon and explain the situation to them.
