Does anyone else have a problem with thyroid medicine causing a huge appetite?

I started taking thyroid meds about 2 weeks ago and have a weight issue. I was doing pretty well until I started the meds and now I have to stay out of the house so I don't just eat and eat all day. I feel hungry 5 minutes after a meal and this is not normal for me. Anyone else experienced this?

  1. It sounds like your are overdosing on synthroid. Is that the thyroid medication that you are taking? Go back to your doctor, get another blood test, and have your medication adjusted to a more appropriate dose.
  2. It is synthroid, and thank you so much to both of you for taking the time to answer.
  3. Yes! I asked my doctor about it, and he said it was a sign your dosage was too high. I would tell your doctor about it....
  4. I've been hypertyroidic (and thus took 2 kinds of of thyroid suppression medication) and am now hypothyroidic (and take thyroid replacement hormone) so I know both sides of the issue.
  5. You did not indicate if you are on thyroid replacement hormone or thyroid suppression medications. Each affects your body differently, in which case the over or under dosing would be opposite.

Basically it sounds to me as if the thyroid medication is not meeting your body's needs. I would speak with your endocrinologist about this. Without knowing what type of thyroid disorder you have and the type of meds you are taking, I can't really help you much.
