  2. I am not knowledgeable about long term effects, but I can say as far as short term effects, the thyroid is effected adversely for one to two weeks after you stop taking the pills. Think of this way, if you ran at full speed for several hours past your normal limitations, once you stopped, you would crash with exhaustion. The thyroid reacts similarly. Once you stop taking the diet pills, the thyroid often crashes and goes through a period of having to regulate it's normal rate. During this time, you may find yourself sluggish, and chances are you will gain a few pounds until the thyroid resets.
