Question about hypothyroid?
My niece is only 13, and her mama is in Iraq. She was fine before mom left and now she is hypothyroid and gained a lot of weight. Could this be due to the stress she is under?

- No, it is not related to stress. Her thyroid gland has slowed down the amount of hormone it produces. Hypothyroid can be caused from diet (fluoride, soy) from Hashi's, from reduced iodine intake, and from unknown reasons.
Make sure she gets her thyroid testing done is the am only. Most people feel best with the TSH below 2.0.
- Hypothyroidism Is not related to stress, it is a medical condition that requires attention. There are many more side effects from the desease.

- I was just recently told I have hypothyroid and my level was 6.3 .
I think they said that normal levels are between 0.5 and 5.5 or something. I was also told that hypothyroid is an autoimmune condition. A common medication called Synthroid ( but also has generic brands... the one I'm on is called Levothyroxine ).
A thorough doctor will and should retest every four to six weeks to see if your levels are back to normal. I have read that you need to be on medication for "the rest of your life", but I think it depends on certain factors, really. I have a 10 time refill... hmmm... good luck !
