What exactley does being hypothyroid mean?

I was born hypothyroid and I've been taking medication all my life for it but nobody has ever explained to me what exactley it means to be hypothyroid, or why I am. My grandmother had thyroid cancer and im wondering if that is linked to me not having a thyroid.
