I have hypothyroidism...?

So today I just found out I have a condition called hypothyroidism, and I am now being put on this medication-over the past year, I have gained a bit of weight (around 15 lbs) because of this, and will the pills help my metabolism jump-start back to normal? It's just a little hard seeing all these people at school (I'm 15) eating pizza and cookies and not gaining a bit of weight, and I eat insanely healthy, and still gain weight at a fast rate. Also, I feel incredibly bloated and tired-will these symptoms clear up after a while?

  1. Hypothyroidism causes your metabolic rate to radically slow down - your thyroid medication will help it to recover. It will help, and especially will together with diet and exercise. Incidentally, if anyone's wondering whether thyroid medication can cause weight loss in anyone, well yes, but if you don't actually have a thyroid problem then you run the risk of heart attacks, which are a bit ouchy :-)

You should start feeling better within a couple of weeks. Keep seeing your doctor regularly and get regular blood tests of your thyroid levels to make sure that the medication's at the right amount.
  2. When the condition is under control the symptoms are lest. I know people with the condition and they live lifes very normal. And is better to eat hearty for you.
  3. I cannot tell if your symptoms will clear up or not. However, adding some weightlifting will help to pick up your metabolism.

Also, although cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower are healthy for most people, they are goitergens and will slow your thyroid function by inhibiting iodine uptake by the thyroid gland. So, avoid them.

Also, make sure that you are getting enough iodine.

    I hope this helps.
  4. Thyroid meds usually do not help with weight loss, but they will help you stop gaining weight. Any weight you gained from the condition will be lost with diet and exercise once you get your thyroid levels correct. This usually means getting the morning TSH below 2.0. It may take a while for the symptoms to go away. This usually doesn't happen until the TSH is around 1.0 for some time. If for some reason, you still feel symptoms after this, then its time to look into another thyroid med. Good luck. I hope you feel better soon.
