Can hypothyroidism hurt my unborn baby?

I am 6 wks pregnant right now. I just received results from my Family Doctor that I have hypothyroidism today. Since he knows I am pregnant, he has advised me to see my OB about this. The problem is that I can not get in to see my OB for 2 weeks. I faxed her office a copy of my test results, but the nurse I talked to said it could wait 2 weeks. I have had a miscarriage before and do not want to experience that again. Is it really okay to just wait to see a doctor for 2 weeks?

  2. The possibility is there, but is sounds as if it may be mild enough that they aren't to concerned, yet want to monitor. Hormones are important during pregnancy, they are constantly changing, and a healthy, normal thyroid regulates production of those hormones.

Perhaps your family doctor wants input from your OB as to what would be the safest treatment for the baby?

If you are worried about waiting the two weeks, you should call again and explain why. If they aren't understanding and work you in somewhere, insist that they do, and at least get put on a wait list to fill a cancelled appointment.

Also you might want to call your family doctor again to find out how serious he feels it is, just so you know and can relay that to your OB.

    Good luck.
  3. if I were u I would go to another ob doctor that can see u dont take any chancs!
  4. Did your doctor prescribe you synthetic thyroid hormone? (Often the medication will have "thyroxin" in its name). If so, you should be fine. If not, call your family doctor for an appointment as soon as you can get one for this prescription.

In hypothyroidism the thyroid does not produce enough hormones. As long as they are replaced, it should not affect the baby. And when they are replaced you will start feeling so much better!
  5. Also my doctor did not put me on any medications yet.
