Can hypothyroidism cause bleeding gums? please note that I do Not have gum disease as I have been to two dentists who have said my brushing is great and told me me to discuss it with my doctor.

  1. Some medications can cause a dry mouth, leading to bleeding gums and a higher chance of decay. You can try using a non-alcoholic flouridated mouthwash (like Act or Oral B). Also start taking vitamin supplements for C and E. A good tool for cleaning and stimulating around the gumline is a "sulcabrush" - it is a single tufted toothbrush designed just for this purpose. It helps to keep the gums healthy. Since you are already brushing and flossing regularly, just add this one step to your daily routine.

  3. Since your dentists say your dental health is absolutely excellent then the only thing I can think of is a bleeding disorder or perhaps scurvy because as far as I know hypothyroidism does not cause bleeding gums. But then of course these conditions have other characteristic symptoms and signs as well like easy bruising, poor healing, irritability, fatigue, etc etc. So better be safe than sorry: See a doctor as soon as possible (just in case) and perhaps it might help if you search for "causes of gum bleeding" online (in case you still haven't). Good luck and hang in there!
  4. In my experience (my mum had hypothyroisim and im also a nurse) I have not known it to. The links I have checked with also do not mention it as a symptom. I would echo your dentist, talk to your doctor, there may well be something else going on which is being partly masked by the hypothyroisism.
