Underactive Thyroid for a 14 year old male?

I went to the doctors about a week ago, because I was tired of being so fat. I never had any energy at all, barely enough to get out of bed and go to school. I finally decided to go to the doctors and see about a diet. I had to get a blood test done, and supposily they told me that one of my thyroid hormones are working, and the other one is all weird, and like doesn't work. They're not going to put me on the pills for it yet, because they want me to have an ultrasound done on my thyroid first. I'm really scared. Will I stay fat forever? I thought I was fat because I eat so much, and I have been fat (not just 10-20 lbs overweight) since I was around 3 years old.. (I had pheumonia when I was 2, and it seemed after I got over it I started to get a huge appitite)..

  2. Hi Adam

Here are some ideas to heal your condition. It will take some work and education on your part to learn some of these methods, but they work without using drugs which Surpress the issue instead of healing it.

Cause: Hypothyroidism can be caused by food allergies, excess stress, environmental toxins, insufficient exercise, B vitamin deficiencies, lack of iron, lack of digestive enzymes, liver disease, hormone imbalances, and/or parasites. All of these factors need to be screened for and addressed before lasting relief can be achieved.

Sulfa drugs, lithium, synthetic estrogen, and antihistamines can exacerbate hypothyroidism symptoms. In addition, if you are on thyroid medication, increase calcium supplementation to reduce the risk of bone loss.

Low thyroid function may also be due to Hashimoto`s disease, a condition in which the body becomes allergic to its own thyroid gland and forms antibodies that attack it, thus lowering thyroid hormone output.

    Natural Cures

Diet: Eat an organic, whole foods diet, emphasizing foods that are naturally high in iodine such as fish, kelp, vegetables, and root vegetables (such as potatoes). Also, increase your daily consumption of foods rich in vitamin B complex, such as whole grains and raw nuts and seeds, and foods rich in vitamin A, such as dark green and yellow vegetables. But avoid foods that slow down production of thyroid hormone, such as cabbage, Brussels sprouts, mustard greens, broccoli, turnips, kale, spinach, peaches, and pears.

Herbs: Mild cases of hypothyroidism can be helped by herbal bitters such as gentian or mugwort, while constipation due to low thyroid function can be improved by yellowdock, butternut, or cascara sagrada. St. John`s wort can also be helpful. Great Idea to do a colon and liver cleanse to push out the toxins in the blood.

Homeopathy: Calc carb. in a dose of 1M once a day is very useful for treating hypothyroidism and improving overall thyroid function.

Hydrotherapy: Hydrotherapy is the application of water, ice, steam and hot and cold temperatures to maintain and restore health. Treatments include full body immersion, steam baths, saunas, sitz baths, colonic irrigation and the application of hot and/or cold compresses. Hydrotherapy is effective for treating a wide range of conditions and can easily be used in the home as part of a self-care program. Many Naturopathic Physicians, Physical Therapists and Day Spas use Hydrotherapy as part of treatment. I suggest several at-home hydrotherapy treatments.

Lifestyle: Regular aerobic exercise can play an important role in helping to regulate thyroid hormone production.

Nutritional Supplementation: Organic thyroid glandular extracts can help restore normal thyroid function, but should only be used under the supervision of your physician. Other useful nutrients include vitamin A, vitamin B complex, essential fatty acids, iodine, kelp, calcium, magnesium, and zinc.

    Best of health to you
  3. Once I take the thyroid pill, and see the dietitan about a diet plan/exercise plan that works for me.. will I eventually loose weight? [I'm 5'11 and 14]
  4. Hello, I feel compelled to try to explain some things about thyroid problems to try to put you at ease. It sounds as if you have hypothyroidism. There can be many reasons for you thyroid not functioning correctly.

First of all, I had a thyroid tumor about 30 years ago. I gained a huge amount of weight, my hair became brittle and in bad condition and fell out, I was constantly cold, and other classic symptoms of Hypothyroidism but all the doctors I saw missed it because they blood tests they gave me for thyroid were within the normal range. Finally, I felt so horrible one day at work an acquaintance gave me the card of a doctor he had just seen.

I went to the doctor and he immediately put me in the hospital and ran a nuclear scan on me, which located the tumor on my thyroid. They removed the tumor and it was benign

Now it is so much easier with Ultrasound scanning. It will not hurt and it is interesting and you can see inside your neck and throat and even ask questions of the technician but the tech cannot give you any sort of diagnosis.

I have been on thyroid medication for over 30 years. The only time I have had trouble is when they prescribed me a generic version of my usual tablet - insist on the regular medication and do not take generic thyroid medicine; is my best advice.

Also, you have to stop as much as you can your intake of soy products because they block the thyroid medication and also interfere with the body's hormone production: I just went through years of weight gain and misery because I was a vegetarian and eating soy all the time - finally a doctor caught on to the soy/thyroid problem and I have cut out all the soy I can and have now been on Armour Thyroid for 3 months. I am feeling like a NEW person.

You are young. I would highly recommend your parents take you to an Endocrinologist who specialized in thyroid and glandular disorders. Regular medical doctors know a little about thyroid problems but not enough and if the blood tests come out okay they tend to ignore the patient's symptoms

You are going to feel so much better when you are correctly diagnosed and can get on medication and start dieting and exercising.

No you will not be fat if you take your medication and maintain a good diet.

You will benefit greatly if you read about thyroid and the medical repercussions of thyroid problems on line. The Internet is a great resource and a boon to people who have these sorts of medical problems.

Wishing you a speedy recovery but it may take a year.

    SOY AND THYROID FUNCTION

Although soy has been known to suppress thyroid function for over 60 years, and although scientists have identified the goitrogenic component of soy as the so-called beneficial isoflavones, the industry insists that soy depresses thyroid function only in the absence of iodine. The University of Alabama at Birmingham reports a case in which consumption of a soy protein dietary supplement decreased the absorption of thyroxine. The patient had undergone thyroid surgery and needed to take thyroid hormone. Higher oral doses of thyroid hormone were needed when she consumed soy--she presumably used iodized salt so iodine intake did not prevent the goitrogenic effects of soy (Endocr Pract 2001 May-Jun;7(3):193-4).

You should avoid iodine if you are taking thyroid medication

  5. Will I alwyas be fat?
  6. I am 19 and have the same problem as you. I did not need an ultrasound, the doctor just put me on the pills. Maybe because you are under 18 that they are a bit concerned about giving you that sort of medication. As for ever losing weight, the diet they put me on has worked, I have lost 20kg in the past 6 months. I could have lost more, but I have university to stress me out.
  7. Would anyone be able to recommend anything?
