Over active thyroid.?
Yes, I have hyperthyroid..)= and they found a large "complex" Nodual in the right side of my thyroid and some small millimeter size noduals on the left side...Im losing wieght, insomnia, irritabilty, depression, I dont feel myself. Im 24 5'9 and I weigh about 110 lbs.and I have a 3 year old girl, but I probley eat more than half the people I know. Im wondering if they take my thyroid, will I gain weight dramatically and be fat? lol I know this is vain, I want to be able to gain weight, and what about the hormones they give you as treatment? Is it true that taking hormones give you a better chance for cancer? Thanks

- I dont know if you will gain weight after the surgery/radioactive therapy. I am honestly asking the same question. I have hyperthyroid and I cannot get my hormones under control with medicine.
I would assume that you would gain weight, but if you havent ever had a problem with your weight and eat the same things after the surgery I dont think that there would be a problem.
That is something to ask your doctor about definatley, but if there is no other option than to take it out and you have tried absolutely everything you have to have the surgery! And think about it this way, you want to be there (alive) for your daughter dont you? You are no good dead. Id much rather be overweight and still a mom then not alive. You have to do this for her. Take care of yourself so you can be a good mom.. your no use depressed, irritated, and running on no sleep!!
Take care of yourself!
- I also had hyperthyroidism. I chose radioactive iodine treatment instead of surgery, since they are able to regulate the amount of radiation and get better results. After my treatment I became hypothyroid (I am told that this is very common) and will have to take Synthroid for the rest of my life. Synthroid is very safe and it's basically a synthetic thyroid hormone. You will not gain a ton of weight - it's a very gradual weight gain and as long as you eat normally you should be able to easily maintain a normal weight. Synthroid is so safe that I was able to take it during my pregnancy and was able to breastfeed with it. Good luck to you.
- those of what you feel are what happens when your thyroid produces too much thyroxine (the hormone). its normal function is to regulate the body's metabolism. too much of it increases your metabolism. if you do not have enough carbohydrate source it eats away your body fats then eventually your muscles as a form of energy so your body decreases in mass. you might also probably feel very hot at times. the medication they are giving you helps to reduce the activity of the thyroid so you would produce less thyroxine. if you take them regularly without misses you would have a better chance to regain weight and vitality for not too long. about the cancer thing, im not that sure, sorry..

- Hello, I did have the same problem 7 years ago. My thyroid was neutralized with radioactive iodine. You simply don't have a choice, have have to accept treatments because as it is you are damaging your hearth, the other direct side effect is to develop osteo porous, affecting your bones...
The medication has absolutely no side effects, it's been around for ages so they are able to give you a proper dose. It's really not complicated, you take one pill a day. The only thing I say can bother me at times is that I tend to be cold.
As per weight, I have to say I am overweight but always were, so the relation with my not having a thyroid is not an direct relationship... ha!!!
I would say that you will gain some weight right after the treatment. But you should be able to maintain it aftewards.
Good luck and simply remember that to have one medical problem we are very lucky we have the little one...
