What foods are best if you have hypothyodism and a history of depression? I do take thyroid hormone.?

I'm a big believer that you are what you eat. I know that entire books have been written on the best diet to follow if you have thyroid problems. I would appreciate a recommendation for such a book.

  1. If you are hypothyroid you should be taking thyroid hormone. Please talk to your doctor.

You need to get enough iodine. If your table salt is not iodized you might be able to get a supplement. However, sometimes too much iodine can make your condition worse.

Here is some information about foods, supplements, and vitamins and thyroid hormone:

    I'm sorry, I can't recommend any books because I haven't read them.
  2. I have hypothyroidism also and take thyroid replacement, I have found that a low carb diet helps immensely!
  3. I don't know about the thyroid....but for depression, and this is not a joke...chocolate. It really does work. Just ask my ***!!!
  4. You can go to your local health food store and get a book called Prescription for Nutritional Healing. The basic idea from the book is to avoid fluoride(including that found in toothpaste and tap water) and chlorine(also found in tap water). Chlorine, fluoride and iodine are chemically related; chlorine and fluoride block iodine receptors in the thyroid gland, causing a reduction in iodine-containing hormone production and eventually hypothyroidism. Avoid processed and refined foods like sugar and white flour, avoid taking sulfa drugs or antihistamines unless specifically directed to do so by a doctor. A study at the University of Massachusetts revealed that levothyroxine(synthroid and others) can cause as much as a 13 percent decrease in bone mass, so talk to your doctor about prescribing Armour Thyroid tablets to replace deficient thyroid hormones. Eat in moderation foods like brussels sprouts, peaches, pears, spinich, turnips, and cruciferous vegetables like cabbage, broccoli, kale, and mustard greens. If your condition is severe omit these foods entirely, they may further suppress thyroid function. It will also give you names of vitamins and supplements to take to replace minerals your body might be lacking due to the low acting thyroid. Hope this was of some help to you, cause the book has been a big help to me.
