Can Phentermine be taken with Synthroid?

I'm experiencing weight gain after getting a total thyroidectomy in December. I've had success with weightloss in the past while taking Phentermine, but now I don't know if I can take it with the Synthroid or not.

  1. because both synthroid & phentermine can increase your heart rate & blood pressure, it would be bad to combine them if you have problems with blood pressure or a history of heart problems, especially if you have been previously diagnosed with an irregular rhythm or premature contractions.

additionally, I would hold off on taking phentermine unless your dosage of synthroid has stabilized.

ask your doctor if your TSH level is within the reference range or not. if it is, and you haven't a history of the aforementioned problems, then you can take them together
  2. personally, I would stay aware from any diet drugs...as heartbreaking as it is until you get your thyroid regulated it will probably be difficult to lose the weight. You may want to get you free t3 and free t4 tested as well if you haven't already..just because you are in the 'so called range' it doesnt mean you are where you personally need to be...the other thing is you may need T3 if you body is not converting properly...you are still new to the thyroid issue so please just continue and don't stress to much...ck out about.com and go to the thyroid section as there is a lot of great info there and also stopthethyroidmadness.com..I learned a great deal from both these sites and I have been fighting this battle for many years...
    take care...cindy
