I take medication for my thyroid, is still OK to take birth control,?

I really want to know if this makes either one of the meds any less effective

  1. Try being more specific. What medication? For hypo- or hyper- thyroid?

In general, you want to take your b.c. at least four hours after you take thyroid meds... the b.c. can interfere with the absorption of your medication. FYI, antacids and calcium and iron supplements also should be taken four hours after your thyroid meds, and for the same reason.

I'm not personally aware of any research indicating that thyroid medication will lower the effectiveness of your birth control... it doesn't mean it's not possible, but it's probably not terribly problematic. You can ask your pharmacist when you go to pick up your meds if they have any listed drug interactions.
  2. It WILL NOT make the birth control less effective. Been on thyroid medication and birth control for years! Antibiotics will lessen the effect of birth control. If you should be but antibiotics talk to your doctor or pharmacist about the effectiveness of the birth control.
