How long after taking thyroid medication, does the weight start to come off?
- The weight doesn't just come off. You have to work at it, and it will be tough. The medication allows you to lose the weight, but it doesn't do it by itself, you need to exercise.
- This is one I know a LOT about. I have been taking medication for underactive thyroid for MANY years. You did not say how long you have been on it for. Usually what happens is they will put you on a dose, then have you come in and check your blood about 2-3 weeks later and see if that is the correct dosage. It may need adjusting up or down. Once they get your dosage right, your weight should stabilize. I don't think you will LOSE weight though. I find my metabolism to be very very slow, even WITH the medication being the right dosage. You may need to add some diet and exercise routine along with the meds. Good luck
- Only a rare few lose weight by thyroid meds alone. Usually you have to get your morning TSH around 1.0, then diet and exercise and you should lose weight If you don't, then its time for a different thyroid med or testing for insulin resistance.
