Thyroid question?

'The primary function of the thyroid is production of the hormones thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3), and calcitonin. Up to 80% of the T4 is converted to T3 by peripheral organs such as the liver, kidney and spleen. T3 is about ten times more active than T4[1].'

  1. glands do swell in many areas check with doctor.
  2. I am not sure about the hormone thing but either you have too much hormone or not enough. You make up the balance with hormone pills or have to take the gland out and still take pills.
My son has Graves Disease and he is getting better. A sign of the disease is the voice box or Adams apple sweals. He also lost a LOT of weight, eyes got buggylooking and he had the shakes really bad. He also did not act himself. Please see a doctor if you have any of these symptons. It can be life threatning if untreated.
He is doing better now and they have cut back his meds. He also gained back his normal weight and his eyes do not look so bad anymore. (Oh yea, I think he was even losing hair but it looks better) If things go right, he may not have to be on the pill much longer. If they dont. he'll be on it for life.

Please look it up on the internet cause there maybe other symptons. He says some people gain a lot of weight depending how under or over the thyroid is.
  3. I am not sure how to explain the first part of your question, but I do not believe that the voice box has anything at all to do with the function of your thyroid.
  4. can someone explain what this means in simple terms, thx.
  5. and does having a large voice box have anything to do with this gland?
  6. I didn't know half of this! I was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid 2 years ago, although I think I've suffered with it all my life. I don't think having a large voice box has anthing to do with it, although having thyroid dysfunction can result in an enlarged thyroid gland, or 'goiter', which shows on the front of the neck.
